Trencher Maintenance Before Fall | Check Those Wear Parts09/19/2025Fall is fast approaching, and that means colder weather and frozen ground are right around the corner. Now is the time to make sure your Premier trencher attachment is ready to power through the last of the season’s jobs. A little preventive maintenance today can help you avoid downtime tomorrow and keep projects moving. Here are a few key areas to check before your next dig: 1. Inspect Your Teeth: Your chain teeth do the heavy lifting. Watch for worn, broken, loose, or missing teeth. Replacing them early keeps your trencher performing at peak efficiency, saving you time in tough soils. 2. Nose Wheel Bearing & Dust Guards: The nose wheel bearing is constantly exposed to dirt, so it wears quickly. Make sure the nylon dust guards are intact and the bearing is turning smoothly; neglect here can lead to costly downtime. 3. Check Chain Tension: Chain tension makes a big difference in performance. Too loose, and it may roll off the nose; too tight, and it strains the bearings. The sweet spot is 1"–1½" of slack when the boom is horizontal. 4. Gear Lube Inspection: Check the planetary gear lube. If it looks milky or it’s been 500 hours, replace it. Otherwise, top it off as needed to keep everything running smoothly. 5. Hydraulic Hose Safety: Scan your hoses for cracks or leaks. Damaged hoses can cause failure and safety hazards. And remember never use your hand to check a leak. Why Act Now By taking the time now to inspect and replace wear parts, you’ll set yourself up for maximum productivity and avoid losing valuable workdays to preventable breakdowns.
