Premier Earth Auger Attachment Preventative Maintenance03/09/2016 With spring right around the corner, now is the time to make sure that you are prepared. As the old quote from one of our country’s founding fathers states, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", Benjamin Franklin. The saying might be old but it is still as true today as it was back when the term was first coined. A little bit of TLC on your earth auger attachment will help ensure you start this spring on the right foot to a productive and profitable year. Here a just a few things to look at when doing a little preventative maintenance: 1) At a minimum you should check the gear lube in the planetary gearbox and clean off the magnetic plug to remove and debris that has collected. If it's been 500 hours since your last oil change or if the oil looks milky then now is a good time to change this fluid out. 2) Inspect the output shaft seal for any damage or noticeable oil leakage and replace if necessary. Even a slow leak can lead to a catastrophic failure if left alone. 3) Inspect and grease all the connecting pins. Check snap pins and snap rings and replace if worn or damaged. 4) Check your hydraulic quick couplers and hydraulic hoses. Make sure that the couplers are connecting properly and not leaking. Inspect your hydraulic hoses to make sure they are not damaged, always remember to NEVER put you hand over a leak. 5) Inspect all of your earth augers for damaged or worn out teeth and fishtail points. Best thing to do is to replace worn parts now and always keep some spares on hand at all times. Taking the time this spring to check these few things will payoff big when it comes to keeping your earth auger attachment running smooth.
