Keep Your Earth Auger Running Smooth: Preventive Maintenance You Can't Ignore12/13/2024Whether you're gearing up for a busy season or maintaining your tools during the downtime, preventative maintenance on your earth auger is one of the best ways to avoid costly repairs and keep your equipment running smoothly. After all, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are," as Theodore Roosevelt famously said—and that applies to your auger too! Taking a few simple steps now can save you time and money down the road, so here are a few tips to keep your auger in prime condition:Check the Gear Lube: The planetary gearbox plays a critical role in keeping your auger turning smoothly. Regularly check the gear lube and clean off the magnetic plug to remove any collected debris. If it’s been a while (or 500 hours) since your last oil change, it’s time to give that fluid a fresh start.Inspect the Output Shaft Seal: The output shaft seal should be free of damage and oil leaks. Even a small leak can cause major issues down the line, so don’t let it go unnoticed.Grease the Connecting Pins: All those connecting pins need some love too! Be sure to grease them regularly and replace any snap pins or snap rings that show signs of wear or damage.Hydraulic Quick Couplers and Hoses: Check the hydraulic quick couplers to ensure they connect properly without any leaks. Also, inspect hydraulic hoses for signs of damage or wear—if you see any, replace them immediately. Remember, never put your hand over a leak!Teeth and Fishtail Points: A sharp auger starts with healthy teeth! Regularly inspect the teeth and fishtail points for wear and tear. If they’re damaged or worn down, replace them before you end up doing more damage. And remember, Premier Attachments has all the teeth and replacement parts you need to keep digging.Taking a little time now to inspect and maintain your earth auger will pay off big when you’re out in the field.
