From Dirt to Done: Choosing the Right Auger Bit for the Job04/15/2025From Dirt to Done: Choosing the Right Auger Bit for the Job At Premier Attachments, we know that time is money—and the wrong auger bit can cost you both. Whether you’re setting fence posts, digging footings, or planting trees, selecting the right bit for the job is just as important as the machine behind it. The right match means faster drilling, less wear and tear, and a cleaner, more precise hole. We manufacture all our bits in house right here in the beautiful USA. Here’s a quick guide to help you go from dirt to done—smarter and faster. 1. Know Your Ground Conditions Before you even fire up your auger drive, get familiar with the ground you're working in. Different soil types require different levels of aggressiveness in your auger bit. Loose or Sandy Soils Recommended Bit: Standard Dirt Auger Bit (CDF) Tooth Options: Standard dirt teeth and pilot points Why It Works: These soils are easy to drill and don’t require a lot of torque or specialized cutting edges. Clay or Compacted Soil Recommended Bit: Heavy-Duty Dirt Bit (CDC) Tooth Options: Tougher teeth with a more aggressive digging angle. Why It Works: Clay is dense and can bind up a lighter-duty bit. Heavy-duty options provide more aggressive cutting force and durability. Rocky Ground, Asphalt, or Frozen Ground Recommended Bit: Tungsten Carbide Rock Bit (CDC or CDR) Tooth Options: A bullet-style carbide teeth and pilot points (CDR) or a heavy-duty dirt bit with optional carbide teeth (CDC) Why It Works: You’ll need extra cutting power and abrasion resistance. Tungsten carbide holds up where standard teeth wear down quicker. Rock or Concrete Recommended Bit: Rock Auger Tooth Options: Heavy-duty bullet teeth with reinforced flighting Why It Works: You’re not just drilling, you're grinding through tough material. You need maximum torque and the toughest materials we offer. 2. Match the Bit to the Job Type Your project goal also helps determine which bit is best. Ask yourself: how deep do I need to go? What size hole do I need? Will I hit obstructions? Fence Posts & Poles – Standard or heavy-duty dirt bits work great for post holes up to 36" deep. Tree Planting – Use wider diameter bits for root balls. Optional tree augers with tapered flights help with cleaner holes. Foundation Footings – Heavy-duty bits with precise cutting edges provide straighter, deeper holes. Utility Pole Installation or Demolition Work – Consider combo setups or high-torque drives with rock-rated bits. Extensions & Adapters: Need to go deeper? We make a variety of adapters and extensions to better suit the depth you need to go! 3. Don’t Forget the Teeth and Pilot Options Even the best auger bit won’t perform well if your teeth are dull or wrong for the job. Premier Attachments offers replaceable teeth and pilots so you can fine-tune your bit based on field conditions. Standard and Chisel teeth come in carbide and hard-faced options, they will last longer and lead to less replacement teeth! Standard Teeth – Great for everyday dirt drilling Chisel Teeth – Better penetration in compacted soil Bullet Teeth – Best for rock and hard surfaces Multi-Purpose Pilots – Help keep the bit centered and aggressive during the initial cut Premier Quality, Built for the Long Haul Every auger bit we make is built with durability, performance, and of course, made in America. Whether you’re mounting on a skid steer, excavator, or compact utility loader, Premier has the right bit for the job—and the support to back it up. Still not sure what bit you need?
